As September arrives and new routines begin, many of us feel both the excitement and the pressure of this busy season. For moms, the back-to-school shuffle, changing schedules, and daily demands can add to the already full plate of pregnancy or postpartum life. That’s why this month, we’re shining a light on something that matters deeply to every mama: maternal mental health.
Why It Matters
Maternal mental health is about more than just “getting through the day.” It’s about feeling supported, connected, and cared for during one of life’s biggest transitions. Yet research shows that many moms struggle in silence. In fact, a recent study published in JAMA Psychiatry found that brief, focused therapy approaches can actually reduce suicidal thoughts among new and expecting moms. This is a hopeful reminder that small steps and the right support can make a real difference.
The Power of Small Steps
One of the strategies highlighted in the research is called Behavioral Activation—a simple but effective way to boost mood by taking action, even in small ways. The idea is that engaging in meaningful activities, little by little, helps restore energy, purpose, and joy.
For moms, this could look like:
Taking a stroller walk with your baby (hello, fresh air + movement!)
Texting a friend to share how you’re really doing
Setting aside a few minutes for deep breaths before bedtime
Joining a FIT4MOM class to combine movement, community, and self-care
Why Community Matters
At FIT4MOM, we believe that motherhood is better together. Movement heals, connection strengthens, and having a circle of supportive women by your side makes the hard days lighter. Whether you’re navigating pregnancy, postpartum, or the toddler whirlwind, you don’t have to walk this journey alone.
A Gentle Reminder
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, please know that you are not alone—and reaching out for help is a sign of strength. Connect with a friend, join a supportive group, or talk to a professional if you need more. And if you’re ever experiencing thoughts of suicide, please call or text 988 for immediate support through the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. You are worthy of care, and your life matters.
This September, Let’s Care for Ourselves and Each Other
As we move through this season of change, let’s commit to showing up for ourselves and for one another—one small step, one act of kindness, one community connection at a time.
At FIT4MOM, we see you, we honor you, and we’re here to walk (and run, and stretch!) alongside you.
Thanks,
