New to Trail Running?

Trail running can open up a whole new world beyond paved surfaces. The softer terrain, natural beauty, fun obstacles and endless views can be a welcome change to running on the road. Like any athletic pursuit, having the right gear and proper technique can mean the difference between having a good time and getting injured. Here’s a few tips to consider if you’re hitting the trail for the first time.

Footwear

Trail running shoes are much beefier and robust than road running shoes. This is to emphasize traction, protect your feet from sharp rocks and provide additional stability and support on uneven ground. If you’re unsure of the best trail running shoe for you, visit our friends at Time Out Sports and they’ll find you the right fit.

Focus on Form

  • Trail running is a fun time to disregard speed and instead focus on distance or a challenging route. Take your time, enjoy the views but don’t forget to focus on form.

  • Keep your stride shorter than you do when road running. Keeping your feet beneath you will help maintain balance on uneven terrain.

  • Speaking of feet, don’t stare down at them! Keep your eyes 10-15 feet in front of you to avoid rocks, tree roots and other obstacles on the trail.

  • If you’re on a steep hill, shorten your stride even more and continue to take small, frequent steps. Keep your back straight, avoiding unnecessary forward leaning. And if the trail is super duper steep, remember, there is no shame in walking. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise: walking is part of trail running!

Fuel for the Road

  • The amount you eat and drink will vary based on the length of your run. If you’ll be out for under an hour, you might be just fine with a small bottle of water. Anything longer than that, consider wearing a hydration backpack or vest to ensure you have adequate nutrition and hydration on your run.
